Arts Council of Tamworth is excited to present the “Totally bilingual, comfortably bicultural, compulsively danceable” Cuban roots, rock & reggae band Los Sugar Kings, live at The Barnstormers Theatre in Tamworth, NH at 7:30 PM on Friday, May 9, 2014. Los Sugar Kings is a Boston-based quartet known for their dynamic live performances, rich harmonies, powerful musicianship and ability to transcend genres with an authenticity rarely heard. In their world, respect is paid to the forefathers and traditions of Afro-Cuban Son, Salsa and Rumba-Flamenca, and Los Sugar Kings also draw on influences from nearly every continent in their unique repertoire. Every show is an intimate dialogue between the band and their audience, with both sides communicating in a manner that is spontaneous, passionate, thoughtful and joyous. Listen to some of their joyous sounds here!

Patiño Vázquez (vocals, guitar, tres), the son of Cuban exiles, is a dynamic performer and singer who is at once approachable, intimate and completely mesmerizing. Add in the African-influenced undulations of Ethiopian native Mikael Mersha (vocals, bass/contrabass), the soaring, take-you-for-a-ride solos and accompaniment by Daniel Abreu (saxophone, piano, vocals) and the incomparable, split-brain whirlwind that is Irish native Benny Benson (drums, percussion, vocals) and it's impossible for a festival to stop from breaking out wherever Los Sugar Kings perform.

Tickets for the Friday evening performance are on sale now—scroll to the bottom of this page. Choose Your Own Ticket Price, $5 to $30+ for adults, $0 to $5+ for youth to 18. Ticket revenues help support ACT’s Art Connects Us artist residencies in school and community—please invite your friends! The Other Store in Tamworth will be offering a Cuban-Latin-themed local foods meal before the show. A feast for your senses—eat delicious food and then dance across the street to listen to extraordinary music. Call 603-323-8872 for menu and reservations.

The public is also invited to the Tamworth Lyceum in Tamworth on Thursday evening, May 8, from 6:30 to 8:30 PM for a workshop on the rhythms and dance of Cuba with Patiño Vázquez. The workshop will focus especially the role of clave, the Son dance form which is the basis of salsa, and the African diaspora in the Caribbean. By understanding the clave (which means key), one can better appreciate the music, and feel the unusual pulse and how it informs the steps and movements in the body during the dance. Participants will also break down the various patterns in the rhythms (clave, tumbao, and montuno), and learn how every instrument is treated like a drum and behaves as threads in a polyrhythmic tapestry. Musicians, music students, and everyone welcome; please bring your instruments and drums, or come clap, sing, dance, listen. Workshop free; donations always welcome in support of our work in school and community.

On Friday, May 9 at 2:00 PM, at the Brett School in Tamworth, Los Sugar Kings will offer a free mini-concert and Q&A. Homeschoolers, students from other schools, and the public are welcome: if you plan to bring a large group, please let the school know in advance, 323-7271.
